01 / THE PROCUREMENT PROBLEM

The lowest price
is only the beginning.

A quotation tells you the price.
Your decision needs the full picture.

Longer lead times, larger order quantities, inventory exposure, and freight can change which supplier makes sense. Comparing those tradeoffs takes work—before negotiation even begins.

Procurement Lead connects cost assessment with a proposed buyer–supplier agent workflow. The aim: help smaller procurement teams reach informed preliminary terms, then review, refine, and approve them.

Your buying conditions

52 weeks / year
Demand σ: 200 units / week
Ordering cost: $150 / order
Unit weight: 10 lb
Model & assumptions

Annual cost = material + cycle inventory carrying + safety-stock carrying + ordering + transport.

D = weekly demand × 52; cycle inventory = Q/2; safety stock = z × √(Lσ² + d²σL²); orders/year = D/Q.

Carrying costs value inventory at unit price. Freight is charged per 100 lb per order, including Supplier B’s 50,000 lb minimum. Demand and lead time are independent. All values use one illustrative dollar currency; no FX conversion.

Steady-state annual estimates. Excludes duties, taxes, in-transit carrying, shortages, quality costs, capacity limits and negotiated discounts. Fractional orders are annualized. This model does not optimize lot sizes.
